The Makonde tribe is an ethnic group that originated in Mozambique. During the 1960-80s the majority of the Makonde tribe became refugees in southeast Tanzanian entering refugee camps.
After the bloodshed in Mozambique the Makonde used the medium of wood carving to represent their struggle within the civil war. and as a way to support themselves they used the art creatively.
Today the Makonde craftsman’s are also to be found in Mto Wa Mbu. They are one of the best carvers in this industry.
They use different types of wood from Ebony (Iron Wood) to Soft wood to make their carvings
